On Saturday, November 1st, Morrison Hotel Gallery and Bookmarc present ECHO HOME, bringing the photography of indie icon JAMIE HINCE of THE KILLS to their galleries in Los Angeles. Opening events will be held on November 1 at Bookmarc, 8407 Melrose Place, Los Angeles, from 4–6pm. Proceeds from this event benefit Rational Animal—a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness to help at-risk animals. One of their signature community service projects, Mother’s Comfort Project, sews and delivers thousands of beds to animals in shelters.
Morrison Hotel Gallery and Bookmarc share a spirit of sophistication, swagger, and authenticity. Both brands have a flair for making trendsetting decisions. Jamie Hince is a like-minded soul with his distinct mix of iconography and intellect. The English guitarist, singer, and songwriter is a genre-defining musician with a signature sensibility that encompasses grit, humor, and sultry expressiveness. As a musician, he’s worked with cult acts such as Fiji, Scarfo, and Blyth Power, but he’s best known for his mesmerizing and sensual indie rock with The Kills, which he co-founded with singer, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and fashion icon Alison Mosshart in 2000. To date, The Kills have released three critically acclaimed albums. Hince is one of the rare breeds of artistically fluid musicians that can authoritatively work in other mediums. Prior to the ECHO HOME exhibit, Jamie Hince will be in Los Angeles to play with The Kills Halloween night at the Forum with tour-mates Queens Of The Stone Age.
The idea of making this a charity focused exhibition began when Rational Animal charity reached out to The Kills with an opportunity to embrace their inner animal by creating a photo for their latest campaign in support of their signature Mother’s Comfort Project, which sews and delivers beds to homeless animals in shelters in the greater New York City area. Alison and Jamie jumped on board without hesitation creating a beautiful black and white portrait of Alison with his dog Archie curling up in bed, with an homage to Terry O’Neill’s photograph of Bridget Bardot sharing her bed with her dog. This image was used this year to promote fundraising for Mother’s Comfort Project. With the ECHO HOME event, Rational Animal will also debut its original series of notecards Artists with Animals at Bookmarc. This set of 10 cards includes the O’Neill’s Bridget Bardot photo and features legendary artists with animals taken by the A-list of music photographers represented by the Morrison Hotel Gallery.
Other celebrities have come together working with Rational Animal to support at-risk animals through our Gimme Shelter events.
On Tuesday, June 10th Morrison Hotel Gallery and animal charity Rational Animal present ECHO HOME — the premiere photography exhibition of The Kills’ guitarist Jamie Hince.
The exhibit opening will be from 7–9 pm at the Morrison Hotel Gallery located at 116 Prince Street in Soho. Soho Grand will host an exclusive after party with The Kills DJ-ing, 10pm–1am. Donations and proceeds of these events benefit Rational Animal, a media for at-risk animals non-profit organization in New York City, and their Mother’s Comfort Project. RSVP: firstname.lastname@example.org.

The Kills tour comes to New York City for their Governor’s Ball performance and an artistic visual compilation translating into Jamie’s photography exhibition at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, the flagship Soho branch of the fine art music photography gallery.
The idea of making this a charity focused exhibition began when Rational Animal charity reached out to The Kills with an opportunity to embrace their inner dog by creating a photo for their latest campaign in support of their signature Mother’s Comfort Project which sews and delivers beds to homeless animals in shelters in the greater New York City area. The “Sweet Dreams” fundraising campaign for this project is inspired by the great British photographer Terry O’Neill and his photograph of Bridget Bardot with her dog in bed. Alison and Jamie jumped on board without hesitation creating a beautiful black and white portrait Alison & Archie with proceeds from its sale to benefit Mother’s Comfort Project which, since 2009, has sewn over 7,000 beds for homeless animals in New York shelters with the goal of sewing another 7,000.
Since first discovering the great need for comfortable bedding in NYC animal shelters, Rational Animal, the non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to helping at-risk animals, initiated Mother’s Comfort Project (MCP) to produce low-cost beds they could donate to the shelters. Since 2009, MCP has sewn and delivered over 7,000 beds to dozens of New York City area shelters and rescue groups. Through the amazing work of MCP’s volunteers, the group has coordinated regular sewing dates in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Westchester. Each event takes the coordination of a sewing studio, sewing materials, storage, transportation, promotion and the loving hands of volunteers to make beds. Then another team of volunteers deliver the beds into the cages of thousands of homeless dogs and cats who desperately need a soft, comfy, good smelling place to lay their weary souls while they await an unknown future.
Taking this initiative one-step further, Rational Animal is launching a MCP fundraising campaign to support the sewing and delivering of another 7,000 beds in the tri-state area. The campaign launches April 7 with a poster campaign on the streets of New York City and online through the crowdfunder site, RocketHub.
“Every animal we’ve met when giving them a bed, thanks us with so much love in their eyes,” says Susan Brandt, the founder of Rational Animal. “We’ve been able to keep our sewing going for five years, a huge achievement, but we are now asking the larger community to chip in to support this important work.”
The “Sweet Dreams” poster campaign features beautiful people sleeping with their animals and can be seen on 75 phone kiosks in the NYC area through July. The posters pay homage to the famous photograph taken in the 60s by world-renowned British photographer Terry O’Neill of actress Bridget Bardot, known as a matriarch of animal rights, in bed with her dog. Mr. O’Neill generously donated the use of this photo to Rational Animal for their animal notecard fundraiser, via Morrison Hotel Gallery, a major sponsor of Rational Animal activities.
The first poster in the Sweet Dreams campaign launches on April 7 on 75 phone kiosks in New York City, thanks to a donation by media purveyor Van Wagner, and features model Leyden Pavlovics with a rescued dog Lizzy and rescued cat Jesse taken by acclaimed portrait photographer Salem Krieger.
On June 7 the second poster in this campaign goes on the streets of NYC featuring The Kills bombshell Alison Mosshart taken by band mate Jamie Hince and includes his dog, Archie. The timing is perfect with The Kills coming to town in June to perform at the Governors Ball Music Festival.
People will see these posters and be able to link via QR code or by visiting rational-animal.org to make tax-deductible donations through RocketHub. Donors will receive gifts, which include bed donations to your shelter of choice, as well as fine art music photography, jewelry and more gifts for the animal lover.
The goal is $20,000, and every additional $20,000 raised will go towards the establishment of a new MCP location beyond the New York area. In addition, this project raises awareness about the thousands of homeless animals in shelters who need comfort while they await their forever homes. The official Orange Ribbon for At-Risk Animals is incorporated into the posters, as it is widely distributed through Rational Animal during the Go Orange for Animals month of April.
Mother’s Comfort Project is the brainchild of three generations of women who love animals. Started by Rheda Brandt, in honor of her mother, Fannie Shapiro, who rescued animals in the 1950s. Rheda followed in her mother’s footsteps as an animal lover and rescuer, and now her daughter, Susan Brandt, is carrying the torch to help at-risk animals. Susan founded Rational Animal, a 501c3 non-profit organization based in NYC in 2002 with the mission of creating media and special events to help at-risk animals and increasing public awareness about their plight. Campaigns have included two sets of star-studded PSAs that ran on NY1 News, WABC; five editions of NYC’s first and only shelter map, benefit concerts featuring the Beastie Boys, Debbie Harry, Moby, Marshall Crenshaw, Nellie McKay, Blue Oyster Cult and many others. www.rational-animal.org
On Saturday, March 2nd, Linda Speidell, owner of Fabric Mart in Yorktown Heights, NY and her staff hosted Liz Peterson, of Dancing for Animals, and 18 volunteers for the first ever Rational Animal Mother’s Comfort Project Westchester event! Fabric Mart staff, Erin Brophy, Harper Wood & Carrie Vollrath contributed their sewing skills and expertise alongside Liz Peterson and the 18 volunteers. Together, they produced a whopping 132 beds and 50 catnip toys for shelter animals. The beds and toys will be donated to the SPCA in Briarcliff Manor, New York and Pets Alive Westchester of Elmsford, New York, both no-kill shelters.
A huge thank you goes out to Linda Speidell for the most gracious donation of her Fabric Mart workshop space for this event and her staff for their support. And, thanks to all the volunteers for their amazing work!
Rational Animal is proud to be working with Broadway’s Evita costume designers in an emergency Mother’s Comfort Project relief effort for animal shelters after Hurricane Sandy.
The costume department of Evita has taken great pride in sewing over 100 beautiful beds using Rational Animal’s donation from Polartec fleece and James Perse gently used t-shirts. “Marmaduke” sized beds down to “Sylvester” sized beds will be delivered to a local shelter in need this Thanksgiving weekend on Saturday, November 24.
Susan Brandt, Founder of Rational Animal said: “This is an amazing kick off in our collaboration with Broadway to bring pet beds to the NYC homeless animals who need some mother’s comfort at this difficult time.”
Due to the influx of displaced pets and flood damage to many shelters and rescue groups after the destruction of the hurricane, organizations are in dire need of basic supplies for the pets they have taken under their wing.
The costume department at Evita have graciously joined forces with Rational Animal to spend their down time throughout production sewing pet beds to be delivered to a rescue group in need. Last Saturday Rational Animal delivered a load of pet beds to Bideawee in Wantagh, New York whose organization suffered massive flooding and was in desperate need of supplies and beds.
Rational Animal’s Mother’s Comfort Project regularly holds sewing events with local volunteers to provide homemade beds and toys for municipal shelter animals in need of love and comfort.
There are hundreds – if not thousands – of animals in need across the region. Please consider volunteering at your local shelter or making a donation. Rational Animal is always looking for more sewing volunteers to help with their Mother’s Comfort Project.

Bobbi and the Strays is a wonderful non-profit, no-kill shelter started by Roberta “Bobbi” Giordano, in 1995. Their mission is to undertake rescue operations and to provide essential care for orphaned, stray, abused and special needs cats and dogs and they rescue many dogs and cats from ‘death row’ at kill shelters in New York.
They recently acquired a new shelter space in Nassau County, Long Island, assuming ownership and operational control of a pre-existing animal shelter. Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy wrecked havoc on their wonderful new space and the whole shelter needs to be renovated due to the flooding. They saved all the animals during the hurricane through a huge effort from the community.
They now desperately need funds to get new electrical, heating, medical furniture, cages, floors and walls back in functioning condition. With the weather cold and damp, it’s very hard on all people and animals involved, so please do what you can to help.
We are selling the Mini Print Animal Cards in partnership with Morrison Hotel Gallery benefiting Bobbi and the Strays. You can buy them on the Morrison Hotel Gallery website.
On September 10th 2012, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in Brookhaven, NY rescued 23 abused Pitbulls, including three puppies, from a dogfighting ring in Shirley, NY. This truly dedicated shelter is all about the animals and their success rate with adoptions is proof of that. So even though they already had over 200 dogs and a very small budget, they gladly took in these 23 dogs.
Rational Animal — an organization celebrating its 10th year of operation in helping animal charities and shelters through its media advocacy campaigns — got the notice of the need for supplies for this rescue at the Brookhaven Shelter and jumped at the chance to help. Their Mother’s Comfort Project, a bed-sewing project that to date has delivered over 5,000 homemade beds to the animals in shelters around NYC, went beyond NYC this time to Long Island to deliver beds to help the Brookhaven Shelter comfort the wonderful rescued dogs. This particular batch of homemade beds was made by volunteers at Deloitte during their annual volunteer day.
In addition, Rational Animal worked with Animal Feeds, Inc. (Bronx, NY) to deliver some needed food as well.
“We are grateful to Brookhaven for coming to the rescue of these lovely animals,” says Susan Brandt, Founder of Rational Animal. “We thank Deloitte for sewing with us and our dedicated volunteers for delivering these beds and helping us bring some comfort to these poor dogs who have had a rough start on life, but hopefully will have a rosy future with more people going to Brookhaven Shelter to adopt them.”
On Sunday March 5th 2012, Rational Animal Board Members David Glicksman, Donna Lentol, Maggie Hurley, Founder, Susan Brandt, photographer Salem Krieger, intern Lauri Buck, longtime volunteer Courtney Kistler, and Peter Blachley our sponsor from the Morrison Hotel Gallery delivered 200 beds to the Manhattan AC&C, placing one in each cage of all cats and dogs in the adoption sections.

NEW YORK, NY (May 16, 2011) — This Thursday evening, fifteen 6th grade students at the Bronx School of Science Inquiry and Investigation (MS 331/ PS 306) in the Tremont section of the Bronx will present and be recognized for the work they’ve put into a ten-week after-school program focused on the issues of animal welfare, specifically those pertaining to at-risk animals in New York City.
The students’ sketches, artwork, photos, and reflective writing pieces will also be on display, helping to convey what they learned each week, such as adopting shelter and rescued animals, animal cruelty, the importance of spaying and neutering, and the responsibility of having and caring for a household animals.
The after-school program was born out of ideas and concept within the Orange Ribbon for Animals “SAVE.CARE.LOVE” campaign by Rational Animal, a NYC-based non-profit organization dedicated to using media and marketing to increase public awareness for at-risk animals. Heidi Calderon, 21, an FIT student and aspiring teacher, and Courtney Kistler, 30, a marketing professional, of Rational Animal worked through Citizen Schools, a NYC-based non-profit that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day for children in low-income communities, to execute the ideas for the weekly lessons.
“I didn’t think I had it in me. It would be too hard. It would make me too sad. I would want to bring everyone home with me. That was how I felt on my first visit to a municipal shelter delivering beds for the Mother’s Comfort Project. But, deep down, I also knew that whatever apprehension I had was totally outweighed by wanting to give some love and a soft place to rest to all of the beautiful animals that were there.”
Through the Mother’s Comfort Project, Rational Animal provides comfy homemade beds for animals to curl-up in and muffle the noise. We also make catnip toys adorned with orange animal guardian ribbons. The beds and toys are sewn by Rational Animal volunteers and school clubs at sewing studios in Brooklyn. They are delivered to Animal Care & Control where we place them inside cages and give pats of hope to weary souls.
